It's pretty normal for new parents to show off their baby to the world, whether it's through social media or social outings, no matter if it's family or friends. But for this one particular parent, she did everything that she could in order to not have her ex-boyfriend's parents involved in her daughter's life. It was imperative that these awful people weren't there to try and ruin such a bright light of positivity that was her daughter.
There are overbearing relatives, and then there are these two people. Only Olivia could say her ex boyfriend's parents take the cake. They didn’t just show up uninvited to shower the newborn, but thought they could have her, and not just for the holidays.
This entire nightmare began the minute after Olivia put an end to dating this guy she had been seeing regularly. She felt alone, with no one she could talk to or find sympathy with. So she returned to Eddie, her ex-boyfriend she still had some unresolved feelings about. They started seeing each other for a month, and in that time, she got pregnant. Naturally she wanted to keep the baby, based on her personal religious beliefs. But as much as she wanted to have this child for her very own, she had a lot of doubts about Eddie being in her life. She wasn't sure that he should be a permanent fixture in her and her child's life going forward.
Eddie disagreed with Olivia. He didn't want to go anywhere. He was slightly older than Olivia, and he kept telling her how he was finally starting over his career. Well, she had some reservations about that, because it turns out that he didn't really do any work. He pretty much lived off of funds from his family's support. In addition, he was very, very full of himself, and he also neglected his poor pets. None of these things really screamed father material. Despite these flaws, Eddie ignored them and desperately wanted to stay together. He used practically every excuse in the book to plead his case to Olivia. He genuinely thought that since she was currently pregnant, there was no way that she could escape him. Eddie refused to acknowledge the many awful symptoms that Olivia was struggling with, also making him terrible husband and father material. There were issues, “like morning sickness, dizziness, weakness, [and] mood swings,' and Eddie somehow believed that Olivia was just, "making it all up."
Clearly, this man didn't care whatsoever about his soon-to-be ex-girlfriend. She was deeply concerned about their tumultuous future together parenting this child if they stayed as a unit. She realized that she desperately needed to break things off. Oddly enough, when she brought up the sore subject to Eddie, he was caught completely off-guard despite the myriad warning signs. "He even tried proposing," Olivia recalled. That was a truly bizarre sight to witness, who knows what sort of though process was going through his twisted, narcissistic mind. But Olivia knew that there as absolutely no chance that the two of them could possibly last. She really just wanted him to leave her alone, which is what she pleaded with him to do. But he refused and had something far, far worse in mind.
It only took one month. One brief, glorious month of potential freedom before Eddie returned to Olivia's family's house. Eddie showed up at their doorstep, begging and pleading as much as he could with her parents. He actually believed that they could both convince Olivia that she should get back together with Eddie. Now here's where we explain an important part of Eddie's thought process, yet another reason why Olivia was ultimately disgusted with him. Olivia was born in Russia initially but quickly moved to Ecuador when she was quite little. Olivia describes herself with fair skin, with light hair and light eyes. But in Ecuador, her features were much more rare amongst the population. Somehow, Eddie viewed Olivia as a trophy due to her unique ethnicity and appearance. "He showed me off when we were together to all of his family," Olivia recalled, shuddering at the uncomfortable family gatherings she had to endure. What made matters even worse is that if was simply Eddie's "family tradition" to marry people from other countries, in order to receive more acclaim and a better reputation within his large family unit.
While Olivia was continuing her pregnancy, Eddie's parents, Jorge and Lucia, tried their best to be sweet and supportive to Olivia. They constantly messaged her, asking about how she was doing and if she needed any help from the two of them. But Olivia could see through these pleasantries, she refused to have any help from Eddie's family. She didn't want any money from either Eddie or his parents for childcare. She didn't want to be tied to this bizarre family in any sort of way, and frankly, she wanted nothing to do with Eddie or his backwards family. It was honestly pretty difficult for her to cut ties with Eddie's family. Beforehand, she had tried to view them as quite kind and lovely. But she would quickly realize how that was all a facade for the evil lurking beneath the surface.
There was an important development that quickly formed after Olivia tried to remove herself from Eddie and his twisted family. It had been a few months of pregnancy, but Olivia rediscovered her best friend, Isaac. Isaac had always been genuinely supportive of Olivia during her time with Eddie, and it turned out that Isaac would actually support her during the intense childbirth process. Of course the delivery ultimately went well, and Olivia found herself with a gorgeous little baby girl. Of course, Olivia, "fell in love with her immediately." Olivia could truly see a future for her and her baby with Isaac. But she should have known that things were way too good to be true. Seemingly the minute after Olivia believed that she was finally done with Eddie, she received a shocking text message from her own Eddie's bizarre parents, Jorge and Lucia.
Olivia father, Bob, had texted her that he was outside of Olivia's house now, and he really wanted her to come outside now, "because he had some gifts for the baby." The weirdest thing about all of this? This didn't sound like her father at all. He wasn't following the typical traditions of Ecuador that he had taught her. Apparently in Ecuador, "there is a culture where you have to call before you plan on visiting someone, and it was frowned upon and considered highly disrespectful if you just showed up at someone's house demanding to be let in." It turned out that in most other countries, people shared the same viewpoint. Ecuador wasn't the only place where it was considered rude to show up unannounced or demand to come inside someone's house. Olivia was annoyed, but it was her father, so how could she say no? She finally agreed to open her doors.
When Olivia left her house, she saw Eddie's parents: Jorge and his wife, Lucia. Immediately, they gave her a massive bag of gifts from "all of their family members." Now Olivia could understand to two of them wanting to see their new grandchild. But this timing was completely wrong. Olivia's daughter, let's call her "Abby", was asleep at the moment. Being three weeks old, her getting sleep was quite necessary. Unfortunately, that wouldn't stop these awful grandparents from pushing their way inside and completely ruining everything Olivia had going for herself.
Olivia did put up a protest against simply barging in and disrupting her baby angel's sleep. Who wouldn't? But Olivia was completely horrified as she noticed, "The sweet couple's faces turned and twisted into disgruntled, entitled grandparents." The gifts and the supportive language had all been a front. These two thought they were entitled to time with their granddaughter, as if she was simply an object for them to take a turn with. Olivia wouldn't put up with that sot of treatment, and she tried to tell off these two elderly grandparents. That didn't sit well with the two of them though, and, "Lucia struck with her fist against their car," while Jorge simply grumbled. Whoa, maybe don't let in the people who are slamming their car in rage over a single visit? Jorge and Lucia claimed that they had an inherent right to visit their grandchild before of all the gifts they had literally just given to Olivia. Olivia's daughter had no idea about these presents yet. Apparently Lucia desperately wanted to hold her, but was it seriously impossible for the two of them to just wait and come back at a better time? Apparently that really was. Presents from random family members that Olivia had never met wasn't a good justification for waking up her daughter, no matter how desperate these two grandparents were quickly revealing themselves to be. Olivia herself could hardly walk now, as she was still recovering from giving birth! This was totally selfish on the grandparents part, and they would have to leave immediately or else. Olivia shut down their conversation and turned cold, trying to succinctly explain her case to the grandparents. But these twisted grandparents escalated things way too quickly for anyone's comfort.
Olivia boldly stated to the grandparents, "Excuse me, but I can't let you inside right now. She is sleeping and wakes up easily."
Jorge, who apparently had no idea how babies worked, responded, "Oh come on! It's just a baby, she will fall asleep right after a few minutes! Just let us come in, Lucia has come all this way to carry her!"
Olivia was completely dumbfounded at how shallow and just plain wrong these two were being right now. "Um, sorry, but it's a no. Thanks for the gifts though, next time it would be nice if you called me prior to coming, so I can make sure that everything is ready for your visit, and you might get to hold her."
Lucia decided now was the perfect time to unleash a volley of fury and fire at the poor, defenseless Olivia. Lucia shouted, "YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO HOLD THE BABY AWAY FROM US, EVEN IF YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR EX DIDN'T WORK! SHE IS OUR GRANDCHILD!"
Olivia desperately tried to defuse the situation by speaking quietly, slowly, and calmly, but was there any hope for her now? She plainly stated, "I understand, but as I said before, I really don't want to wake her up-"
Lucia cut in with words that cut Olivia like daggers. "HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECT ME, THAT IS OUR BABY AND WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO SEE HER! BRING HER OUT RIGHT NOW!" Lucia would not be backing down from this. But neither would Olivia. Despite her exhaustion and physical recovery, Olivia was especially determined, her mama bear instinct were kicking in now.
Olivia sternly replied, "No, sorry, I can't," but Jorge suddenly interject and cuts off Olivia. Jorge explained, "That baby is worth a lot to us! You know that in our family, bloodline is very important. We need to take pictures of her and send them. Did she get blonde hair and green eyes just like you?"
Huh? Worth a lot? Olivia's new daughter wasn't some piece of expensive jewelry. She was a real human being, who deserved so much better than to be talk about like that. The grandparents' behavior not only sickened Olivia, but is completely solidified her decision not to let these two people into her home. She didn't even want the two of them to be a part of Olivia's new life. If this is how they treated her now, they would definitely continue their misguided and nasty thinking as Abby grew older, and Olivia didn't want that sort of negativity surrounding her daughter. These people wanted to show off Abby, they had no desire to care for her whatsoever. Olivia simply said, "She has amber hair and blue eyes-"
Jorge refused to take that as an answer, so he interrupted Olivia to say, "That will do. Bring her out now!"
Olivia tried to tell him, "Sorry, but I am tired. I usually sleep when she sleeps, so I'm going back inside right now."
Lucia was about to completely lose her mind over this. She screeched, "JORGE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS! SHE IS KIDNAPPING OUR BABY AND KEEPING IT AWAY FROM US!"
Their baby? Had they given birth to her? What had they done, besides tried to shove a bunch of random presents at Olivia and verbally attacked her? Olivia was completely in shock. There was no way for them to peacefully resolve this conflict. No amount of discussion would help her make these grandparents more rational. The best solution? Ending this whole thing entirely. Olivia went inside and shut the door behind her furiously. How dare these people try to parade her daughter around, as if she was a dog with some sort of pedigree, rather than an actual living, breathing human being. Olivia remained indoors, and she could see Jorge trying to calm down his frantic wife from the small window by the front door. What these nasty grandparents didn't know was that Olivia had no intention of ever showing them the baby. If Olivia could have it her way, she wouldn't have to see them ever again. And she would do everything in her power to thwart their efforts going forward.
A month later, Olivia got a phone call announcing they were at her house again, and did not call in advance, yet again. But this time, Olivia actually had the time to talk, (even though she didn’t want to). Given their last visit, she was happy to have her father to accompany her outside. Her dad was a “tall,” and “well-built,” with a “stone face,” even though he was actually really kind. But she was thankful he was with her just incase things got out of hand.
Jorge: “Hello, can we see the baby now? We got you more gifts.” Olivia responded by explaining that she appreciated the gifts, but wanted to start a fresh life with Abby, and that they would not be seeing her this time (or maybe ever). Olivia admitted to making her own mistakes in life, but wished to move on. And she hoped they would understand, but not for her sake, but for baby Abby’s. But they didn’t not take this lightly.
Lucia’s face immediately got flushed and turned as red as a tomato, clearly upset, turned away with her head down, and began sobbing. And while Olivia almost felt sorry for her, that feeling quickly went away with Jorge's response.
Jorge chuckled and said condescendingly, “Oh, kids these days. We are her grandparents and have the right to see her, and have her, and do what we wish with her. She is our family, so don’t act immature. You bring her out now so we can see her. Also on holidays, she will be coming to our place and spending it with us. You are just a child and don’t know anything about life.” Olivia was 22 years old at the time, and Jorge wasn’t only insulting her, but assumed she was an incompetent mother based on her age, and stated “She [Abby] will suffer if she doesn’t spend time with us. You have no right to take her away from us. I understand you are angry [at Eddie], but that doesn’t give you the right to behave like this.” And they had the right to behave the way they were? Olivia was the mother, and was entitled to behave however she pleased if it meant the best of her child. But guess who decided to show his face? Yea, Eddie was there, and decided he should chime in, but only made matters worse.
Eddie: “Yes.. she is mad at me and does this as a pay off..” Eddie’s statement was cut off by his father, again being ignorant.
Jorge: “Our family is very prestigious, so the child will be very happy.” It was pretty bold of him to assume Olivia couldn’t make Abby happy (solely because of status). But he went on further, “ Also everyone will like her because she has foreign blood, and we want to make sure everyone knows how special she is.” And having “foreign blood” makes her special? As if baby Abby is some rare commodity?
More defensive than ever, Olivia argues, “My decision is final, sorry, [not sorry] I will not hold contact with you, nor you will get to meet my daughter.” But Karen, oh Karen, couldn’t take it.
Lucia: “HOW DARE YOU LITTLE IMMATURE GIRL TAKE THIS RIGHT AWAY FROM US, WE ARE HER GRANDPARENTS.” At this point, witnessing the craziness of it all, Olivia’s dad had enough. He rarely raised his voice, but obviously felt the need to stand up for his daughter, and also his grandchild. So, Olivia’s dad spoke up, “Ok, you listen to me now. My daughter has suffered enough with people like you, she wants to start a new life and it will be the best for her daughter to do the same. She doesn’t have to be with people like you, so just leave her alone.” He motioned Olivia inside, and said “Let’s go inside now.” While his tone was pretty intense, in a fit of rage, Lucia shoved past Olivia “screeching like a mad banshee,” pushed her way through the house gate, and into the yard. This fury might have surprised innocent bystanders (and even her husband, Jorge, her son, and Olivia), but not Olivia’s father. Olivia’s dad just stood strong, and blocked her from going any further, but not for long.
Jorge: “We are a family and have rights, remember that, you immature girl, you are hurting your daughter.” While they continued to badger Olivia about their rights, and how immature she was, so it was clear they didn’t know the laws in Ecuador concerning single parents and custody of children.
In this type of situation, the mother typically has sole custody “until the father proves he is the father with a DNA test,” and only has a five year window to prove this, otherwise, he would “lose his right to parenthood.” Only the father can do something about the situation in a court of law. And Olivia knew Eddie didn’t have enough money for that (and honestly, neither did his parents). He was unemployed, no career, and didn’t have the time (or the intent). “He couldn’t care about his daughter, and I couldn’t be happier,” Olivia thought, and figured that after all this back and forth it would be done with, but she couldn’t have been more wrong.
Every Saturday and Sunday, Olivia and Isaac would go to the mall together and just walk around with the baby Abby. They live pretty far away from Eddie and his parents, so Olivia and Isaac thought this was a safe place. But apparently Eddie knew their schedule, and must have told his parents. And when they were in line at one of the stands at the mall, Olivia had Abby’s stoller on her left, with Isaac on the right, when she feels the stoller move ever so slightly. And to her surprise she sees Lucia trying to lift Abby from her stroller.
Lucia tries to sneak off with Abby screaming, but Olivia reacts as any mother would and yells, “What tf do you think you are doing!!!” And as Olivia tries to reach for Abby, because the stroller is in between them, Lucia has the opportunity to turn around, and makes a run for it. And the worst thing is that in Ecuador, even if you’re “getting robbed, harassed or attacked,” “almost no one cares or will do anything about it, so all the people in line just stared.” So, Olivia chased after Lucia, but thankfully, Isaac being the quicker one, caught up to Lucia first, and snatched Abby away from her. And while Olivia was (obviously) having a fit and screaming at Lucia for trying to steal Abby, she noticed Jorge waiting in the car outside, just peeking through the window. Then even though it was evident that Lucia was trying to kidnap Abby, she tried to turn it around on Olivia and Isaac!
Isaac: “HOW DARE YOU TOUCH ABBY AND WORSE EVEN STEAL HER AWAY FROM HER STROLLER YOU DUMB B-” Isaac was cut off by Lucia plopping to the floor and yelling for security. And as soon as security showed up, Lucia lied about what had happened, making the whole situation more messed up than it already was.
Security guy 1: “Ma’am what seems to be the problem?”
Lucia: “They kidnapped my daughter, that baby is mine and they took her away from me and then shoved me to the floor and kicked me in the guts!”
Security guy 2: “Is that true?”
Isaac in defense, goes “No, of course not. She stole my girlfriend’s baby from her stroller and tried to make a run for it. She is the mother of Olivia’s EX.”
Lucia: “HE IS LYING , HE STOLE HER FROM ME, I AM THE MOTHER AND SHE LOOKS LIKE ME, DON’T YOU SEE?” And for whatever reason, the security guy tries to mediate, and says, “Well.. let’s check security footage to see if” but Lucia cut him off too. “THERE IS NO NEED FOR THAT. WE ARE WASTING TIME, JUST GIVE ME MY DAUGHTER BACK NOW, SHE NEEDS ME.”
Then because Lucia wouldn’t back down or listen to reason, the security guard was forced to go check the footage. They rolled back the tape and found out that Lucia had been following them for “about an hour,” while Jorge just sat in the car outside waiting, as if he was the getaway ride.
The footage also proved that Olivia and Isaac were telling the truth, so the guard was obligated to call the cops. And even then, Lucia still tried to reach for Abby, but Isaac stopped her "before pushing her down to the ground.” Lucia laid there, screaming, and wallowing on the floor trying to get past Isaac. She threw punches, and kicks to the point that security had to physically restrain her until the police came and showed her off the premises.
That was the last Olivia heard from Jorge and Lucia, and she hopes that its the last. While some may believe it is wrong for her to keep her child from her grandparents, it’s probably for the best. Eddie and his parents didn’t want to be in baby Abby’s life for the right reasons, and tried to steal her away from her mother. Their behavior was more than overbearing or entitled, it was just disturbing. Hopefully Olivia and her daughter have since moved far far away.
