Things Started Out Odd...But Tolerable

Maggie met her fiancè Paul 6 years ago. They were just friends for a couple of years before they started dating so they knew their relationship was serious. Despite this, they still dated for a year before Paul introduced Maggie to his mom. Now Maggie knows what the hold up was, but at the time she didn't think much of it. Before their first introduction, Paul warned her that his mother Judy could be a lot to deal with. According to him, the stress of her high-powered job combined with the fact that Paul's dad had walked out on them had made her "protective." Protective was an understatement.

They met up at a restaurant. Things didn't go terribly...Judy didn't cause a scene per se. But, something was off about her. Even though there was plenty of space at the large table, Judy chose to sit right in between Maggie and Paul, all the while she was rubbing Paul's leg despite his objections. Eventually, he got so fed up that he got up and moved seats. From that point on, Judy learned toward Paul and blocked Maggie out of the conversation. Maggie knew then that Judy was going to be an issue, but she had no idea that the nightmare was only beginning.

Just Run Of The Mill Texts From Mom

Practically the second Paul and Maggie left the restaurant, the messages from Judy to Paul started pouring in, telling Paul that she "didn't need to meet all his hookups." She also said he should keep the dumb ones away from her too. Maggie was completely shocked. For starters, she's not dumb, she has a master's degree! She definitely didn't appreciate being thought of as a floozy either. After all, she and Paul would soon be engaged after all!

Paul explained that Maggie shouldn't take it personally. He explained that Judy didn't like having other people come between Paul and herself. That sounds like some sort of complex to us, but that's just what Paul was used to dealing with. Yet even Paul underestimated his own mother.

That'll Show Him

A week after the outburst, Judy asked Paul to stop by her house. That's when she said she would no longer help support him while he got his Ph.D. According to Judy, Paul was living off her. She gave him the ultimatum to stop getting money from her or to break up with Maggie. The only problem with her plan? She wasn't supporting Paul. In fact, his dad was the one who was helping Paul through school. Despite Judy's threats, she couldn't control Paul financially. So, she went a different route. Paul had a number of sentimental items stored at his mom's house - things like old photos, toys, and other childhood memorabilia. In order to get back at Paul, Judy burned all of it. She thought it would get him back but it did the opposite. Paul stopped talking to her completely. At least, he did for a while.

Dinner Party Disaster

Judy appeared to make some efforts to change her ways. Paul and Maggie went from not talking to her at all to talking to her a little. She started coming over for dinner about once a month, as Maggie said tolerating it was easier than a confrontation. Things were going alright at dinner. After a few of Judy's typical rude comments, she excused herself to use the bathroom. After a while, Paul and Maggie noticed she had been gone for a quite a while. They were a little concerned, it had been over 20 minutes after all. Judy did not answer when they knocked on the door to check on her. They decided they had to open the door, just in case. As the door swung open, they saw Judy standing next to the sink surrounded by various pieces of trash from the garbage can. They couldn't believe what she was holding.

Shock, Horror, And Disgust

Judy had been digging through the bathroom trash can and she pulled out a used rubber and was holding it up with a finger inside, inspecting it. She told Paul and Maggie she was "looking for holes" because she wanted to make sure she wasn't going to be a grandmother. Maggie was obviously revolted. Why on earth would Judy touch that? Despite Judy's claim, Maggie had a theory of her own. She had seen an old episode of CSI that featured a girl "harvesting" used rubbers to try to get pregnant. As crazy as that sounds, Maggie didn't completely let the theory go. She just couldn't be too sure when it came to Judy and her bizarre over-protectiveness of her son.

Either way, Judy tried to sweep the whole situation under the rug. But Paul and Maggie couldn't forget it obviously. Paul even started going to therapy again. They also ended up getting a secure lockbox for their bathroom trash and were very careful about emptying it due to understandable paranoia.

Following that stunt, they had hardly any contact with Judy over the coming months. But, with their wedding coming up, they wanted to try to give Judy one more chance. That's when she pulled the stunt that was the last straw for Maggie and Paul.

An Innocent House Call?

An Innocent House Call?

On that fateful day, Maggie had just gotten home from work. Paul was due to be home in about 20 minutes. That's when Judy knocked on the front door. No one had invited her to come over but there she was. Maggie was extremely exhausted from a long day of work. She didn't even want to let Judy in. She didn't want to be around her alone and she was too tired to deal with her behavior. She tried to convince her to come back later but Judy barged in. What could Maggie do? Judy was already there and it would only be 20 minutes before Paul got back.

Judy started messing around in the kitchen. Being exhausted, Maggie fell asleep. That was a big mistake. She was absolutely shocked by what she woke up to!

A Hairy Situation

A Hairy Situation

Maggie had wanted to grow her hair out for her wedding. She had worked really hard and had gotten it down past her shoulders. The problem was Judy knew this. That's why Maggie was utterly horrified when she woke up to the sound of scissors near her face. She looked up to see Judy holding a huge chunk of her hair and smiling sadistically. Maggie felt her head only to realize the section that had been cut was snipped off at her scalp. It was the same length as if Judy had shaved off a section of her hair!

Maggie finally lost it. She pushed Judy out of her house and slammed the door shut behind her. She called Paul completely distraught. Paul called his mother demanding to know why she would do such a thing. Judy's horrific response was, "She's a lesbian inside, I was just showing you the truth." That was what it took for Paul and Maggie to decide they would not have contact with Judy ever again. But, they also didn't want her to get away with it. They started planning their next step.

Something Had To Be Done

Something Had To Be Done

At this point, Maggie and Paul didn't want any risk of Judy coming around anymore. They took every measure possible to keep Judy away from them. The first thing they did was file a police report about the hair cutting incident. It does classify as assault after all. At first they were apprehensive to do so, but eventually, they felt it needed to be done. Then, they decided they would contact a lawyer. They started working a cease and desist letter sent to Judy along with a formal retraction of her invitation to the wedding. They put up security cameras all over the outside of their home. Paul and Maggie blocked Judy's phone number and her social media profiles. Finally, they warned the wedding venue about Judy and discussed security options. They were really worried she would try something even crazier than cutting Maggie's hair! They definitely weren't wrong to be concerned. Judy was not done.

Things Were Looking Up Until This

Things were going well for Maggie and Paul. They had secured their house, their bank accounts, their wedding plans - anything Judy might try to mess with. Maggie had gone to her hairstylist to try to fix the mess Judy had created. The stylist was infuriated for Maggie and did everything in her power to get her hair looking good. She was able to get everything smoothed out and swept her hair over to seamlessly hide the spot (which was 3 inches wide by the way). Maggie decided she could get extensions before the wedding if she really wanted to as well.

No one had heard from Judy for a while. She was retired and lived alone so there was not really a way to know where she was. Her car hadn't moved from the driveway and the neighbors hadn't seen her. The police were trying to track her down, especially since Maggie had filed the report against her. Maggie admitted she has been on edge, but felt secure in her home and had lots of supportive friends to surround herself with when out and about. Paul was so fed up at his mother that he was wishing her disappearance meant she was dead.

Unfortunately for them, the police did find Judy. She had been staying with a friend in another city. The police didn't pursue charges for cutting Maggie's hair since it was considered a pretty minor crime - though Maggie would surely disagree. So, Judy was back in the same city as Maggie and Paul and she was angry. It was time for her to pull her next crazy stunt.

Alive And Well

Alive And Well

Since Maggie and Paul had made it clear they did not want any contact with Judy, she had to find other ways of getting to them. That's when Paul started getting tons of phone calls from extended family members. They were all offering him condolences. Judy had called them all and told them the horrible news that Maggie had been tragically killed in a car accident. She went so far as to call the wedding venue to tell them the news, too! Fortunately, the wedding venue had already been warned about Judy's insanity. But, Maggie and Paul had to spend hours that day assuring family members that Maggie was, in fact, alive and well and that the wedding was still on. They made the excuse to everyone that Judy had been having "issues." Paul and Maggie could not figure out what Judy was trying to accomplish with this but it definitely shook them. Did she think no one would check in with Paul and instead just not show up to the wedding?

After that Maggie took her car to the shop. She was worried that maybe Judy would try to make her twisted story a reality by cutting her breaks or something like that. Everything checked out fine. She still installed a dash cam, just in case. Just in time, they finalized their cease and desist letter to assure they would have no more contact with Judy. They knew that receiving this letter was not going to make her happy. It was just a matter of time before Judy lashed out in response.

Judy's Last Stand

Judy's Last Stand

As Maggie sarcastically put it, Judy accepted the letter "calmly and with grace." Just kidding, Judy totally snapped. She began sending all sorts of messages to Paul, they ranged from loving to vicious. She made sure to call Maggie every name in the book while she was at it. Maggie and Paul simply ignored all of the messages. But the next day at work, Paul's office phone began to ring off the hook. He just turned it off. Later that day, he was alerted that Judy had come to his gated workplace and demanded that the gatekeepers let her in. They refused, especially after she cursed at them and called them racial slurs. As a last resort, Judy drove to Paul and Maggie's house.

No one was home but the cameras Maggie had installed caught Judy's whole insane tantrum. The video showed Judy walking around the outside of their house, trying everything to get inside. She tried to pry the garage open and she beat against the front window, all to no avail. This only frustrated her more. She emptied a bottle by the front door of Maggie and Paul's house. Later, they learned it had been coolant. She then lit it on fire, but it didn't stay lit for long. All it left was some burn marks on the door. That's when the tables began to turn in Maggie and Paul's favor and karma came for the furious Judy.

Revenge Was Sweet

Revenge Was Sweet

Neighbors must have seen Judy's antics because the police and firefighters arrived at Paul and Maggie's house to find her standing there. She was infuriated. She told the authorities that there was an emergency. Her claim was that Paul was dangerously ill inside and she was trying everything she could to get inside and help him. Of course, they didn't believe her, especially after they checked to see if there was any way that was remotely true. The cops arrested Judy.

In the end, Maggie and Paul's house was perfectly fine and insurance took care of the damage to the door. The ultimate revenge for Maggie and Paul was that Judy was charged with arson. She is in a lot of legal trouble now, and they hope this will be the end of Judy in their lives. But just to be sure, they also began to file for a restraining order and plan to move away right after their wedding, sans their crazy mother-in-law.

This story definitely proves that what goes around comes around! Karma will always take care of things in the long run.
