While speaking to local media outlet KVVU-TV, the Las Vegas republican candidate, identified as Stanely Vaughan, stated he was putting up signs on Thursday, Aug. 29, in a neighborhood east of Pecos Rd. and Twain Avenue when he was robbed.
“I‘m so focused on getting the cable ties through and getting them through the fence,” Vaughan recalled. “I wasn’t paying attention to pedestrians and stuff coming through here. I had my back turned.”
Vaughan, who is running for Assembly District 20, said when he turned around, he was caught surprised by his attacker. “Then he started to lunge at me. I instinctively kicked him and he ran away. I jumped into the car and then I’m realizing I’m bleeding.”
The Republican candidate said he rushed home to his wife, who is a nurse, to treat the wound. He then described the suspect as a man who seemed disoriented and hadn’t bathed in days. He suspected that the suspect was homeless.
Vaughan admitted that he wasn’t planning to put up signs alone anymore following the ordeal. He pointed out that crime has been an issue in the area. He is the security and police liaison for his homeowner’s association two miles away and helps his neighbors file police reports.
“It’s just being a good neighbor. We got to look out for each other,” Vaughan added.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police stated the incident was isolated. Detectives have not tied the perpetrator to any other incident.
Las Vegas Republican Candidate’s Opponent Speaks Out About Knife Attack
District 20 Assemblyman and opponent of the republican candidate, David Orentlicher, offered support following the knife attack.
“I am very concerned and saddened to hear about the attack on Mr. Vaughan,” Orenticher shared in a statement. “and I wish him a speedy recovery. We all should be able to feel safe in our communities, and I am committed to continuing our work to reduce crime across Nevada. I hope the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.”
On his website, Vaughan revealed why he decided to run during the 2024 election. “Our District needs an alternative to communism,” he explained. “This legislating is the exploiting of the strong by the weak. In communism, inequality springs from placing mediocrity on a level with excellence.”
He also said that he has spoken to voters in the area about what they wish to improve on. “Walking door-to-door in my Assembly District, I have listened to Nevadans who have said that they simply want a person who is authentic and who will be honest with them, and not another politician who will say anything people want to hear in order to get elected.”
