One of the tabloids claims Julie Andrews hates Emily Blunt and believes the actress is stealing her legacy by playing her iconic character in Mary Poppins Returns. The story is completely made-up. Gossip Cop can debunk the fake feud.
According to the Globe, Andrews isn’t happy about another actress stealing her thunder by starring in a sequel to the movie that launched her career. Blunt has already received a Golden Globe nomination and positive reviews for the sequel, which is poised to be a hit at the box office. An alleged insider tells the magazine, “I’ve heard Julie is pretty green-eyed over this. She never expected that anyone would go so far as to suggest that Emily was better than her.”
The supposed source further contends that Andrews is particularly incensed because she’s “the one who brought Mary to life, along with all her quirks and mannerisms,” while Blunt “is walking into this with all the groundwork paved for her, so it’s infuriating to see her getting the same kind of praise.” The so-called “insider” concludes, “Julie thought [the sequel] was going to be a flop… Now she’s realizing she was very wrong. It’s been a tough pill to swallow.”
The magazine is simply attempting to create a nonexistent controversy now that the Disney sequel is hitting theaters. Blunt herself said in an interview with Variety earlier this month that Andrews “was incredibly supportive of me playing the part and excited for me to do it.”
Last year, director Rob Marshall told Entertainment Weekly that Andrews is “one thousand percent” behind the film. It’s worth noting, the filmmaker choreographed the actress’s 1995 Broadway show Victor/Victoria, and has remained friendly with her since. In fact, Marshall said in an interview that when he told Andrews he was directing Mary Poppins Returns, “She said, ‘Oh, thank God.’ Then we said, ‘And we’re thinking of Emily Blunt,’ and she just threw her hands up in the air and said, ‘Yes!'”
In addition to the star and the director of Mary Poppins Returns saying Andrews supports the movie, the original Mary Poppins herself has confirmed it. In a 2017 interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Andrews said, “Emily Blunt is going to play Mary Poppins and I am a great fan. I think she is terrific and a perfect pick.”
Meanwhile, Gossip Cop called out the Globe just last week for trying to stir up a spoonful of drama out of the Mary Poppins sequel. The magazine falsely claimed that Andrews turned down $1 million to make a cameo in the movie because she was jealous of Blunt taking her role. The real reason Andrews turned down a cameo is because she wanted Blunt to have the spotlight to herself. There’s simply no feud between the old and new Mary Poppins.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
