During CBS Mornings on Tuesday, June 11, King revealed that Winfrey had been hospitalized with a stomach virus and dehydration. King was about to have a FaceTime chat with her longtime friend to address the gossip surrounding the health emergency.
Oprah Winfrey was notably set to appear with Gayle King on CBS Mornings to discuss her latest book club pick, Familiaris by David Wroblewski.
“I never said you were hospitalized, I did say that you had a stomach something,” King told Winfrey. “Was coming out of both sides, which it was,”
Oprah Winfrey clarified to Gayle King that she was in the emergency room because she was so dehydrated. “I had a dry mouth and I couldn’t keep enough water down to get hydrated, so I went to the emergency room for that, and that’s just it.”
Winfrey noted that while she was not 100 percent quite yet, she was on her way to be. She further pointed out that five people in her household have fallen ill with the same stomach virus.
“The point I was trying to make America, is that it had to be something that would keep her from getting on a plane and coming,” Gayle King said about Oprah Winfrey’s absence. “That’s the only point I was trying to make.”
Winfrey went on to add that it was the “first ever” book club pick she’d missed. “I was too weak to get on the plane.”
Gayle King Asked Oprah Winfrey If She Was ‘Offended’ By Her Sharing the News About the Emergency Room Incident
Meanwhile, Gayle King asked Oprah Winfrey if she was “offended” about her revealing details about the emergency room visit.
“No I thought what you were trying to do was explain why I wasn’t there and doing that in a definitive way,” Winfrey shared. “Everybody I’ve ever known who has access to my email has called me to say, ‘Are you alright?’ Thanks!”
“This is Oprah’s ‘I’m alright’ face,” added King.
Following the news that Oprah Winfrey was hospitalized, a statement was released to PEOPLE about the situation.
“Ms. Winfrey is recovering following a stomach virus,” the statement reads. “And received an IV due to dehydration at the recommendation of her doctor. She is resting and feeling better every day.”
