On Wednesday, April 10, the “Filthy Rich” star stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Baylor University’s head basketball coach Scott Drew, who is reportedly being sought after by other universities, is remaining in his coaching position because “money is boring” and he is staying at Baylor because God is on the school’s side.
Chip Gaines is a huge supporter and alum of Baylor. After transferring to Baylor from Northlake College, he met his wife, Joanna Gaines. The couple got married in 2003 and share five kids. They now live in Waco, TX.
“Money is boring… everybody’s god money,” Gaines declared while responding to Barstool Kentucky asking him and Joanna to stay away from Drew for a couple of days. “We’ve got God on our side.”
Basketball fans immediately went after the Fixer Upper alum, calling him “out of touch” for being dismissive when it comes to money. “Chip Gaines has always creeped me out,” one fan wrote. “How out of touch can you be? I guess his ‘God’ made him filthy rich.”
Another fan pointed out that money is “boring” when people like Gaines have tons of it. “But what about the poor that Jesus championed? they wrote. “What about compassion and trying to help the helpless?”
Responding to the above remark, Chip stated, “Amen… We help EVERY change we get!” He then asked the fan to share the cause they care about so he and Joanna to donate to it.
When told to send another basketball fan some of his money, Chip Gaines responded with, “You got it… 100 bucks coming your way.”
Before TV Shows and Stardom, Chip Gaines Made Money Doing College Students Laundry, Landscaping
Chip Gaine has spoken in the past about the odd jobs he had before he gained stardom.
While majoring in business, Gaines created The Baylor Wash ’N Fold, which was a laundry service for college students.
“The idea was, ‘Who hates laundry more than college kids?’ No one,” he said. “So, we came up with the idea to be their kids’ mom away from home.”
Gaines also stated in 2023 that he was into landscaping while in his 20s. “I refer a lot to the landscape business, which introduced me to the home business,” he explained. “I basically made a little bit of money in about a two-year span in my early, early 20s”
He noted at the time that he was ready to get out of college and start adult life. “I couldn’t have been 21, 22 years, kind of half still in college, but kind of also starting the process of, ‘Man, I hate school and I want to get out of here as soon as I can.’”
He then decided to start his landscaping business in Waco.
