No one really has time for uncomfortable shoes. But once you’ve reached midlife, you really don’t have time for that kind of BS. Life is too short for sore feet. And if you think about it, if your shoes cause pain to the part of the body they’re supposed to serve, the product is defective.
Honestly I wish I’d realized that a decade ago but I’m grateful I’ve lived long enough to finally come to my senses.
The timing is convenient for this epiphany because sneakers have become a style statement In the past several years, whether they’re paired with dresses, suits or denim. Pairing sneakers—especially colorful ones with a chunky sole—with dresses in particular has become an instant classic look in recent years, thank goodness.
Making sneakers even more of an awesome choice is the fact that several new, sustainable brands have emerged, most notably Veja. Its founders, two French guys, began their journey in 2003 when they were performing a shoe industry audit and discovered more than 30 factory workers sharing one room as well as a single hole for both a toilet and a shower. It was a long road to Veja but their tenacity paid off. They are royals-approved and have recently launched collaborations with Marni, Mansur Gavriel, and Vibram, a veteran of the rubber sole industry and why you often see those yellow hexagons on the bottom of your shoes.
Meanwhile, other brands have added sustainability efforts to their production, or have had it from the start. I’ve collected my favorites for you below in the best, brightest colors. But if you’re not into having rainbow hued feet, most of them come in subtler tones as well!
