Is Ellen DeGeneres quitting her talk show to have kids with wife Portia de Rossi? That’s the claim in one of this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop looked into the situation and we can set the record straight.
The comedian recently extended her talk show contract through the summer of 2020, but according to Life & Style, she’s leaving the gig for good once her contract ends. An alleged insider tells the magazine, “Ellen’s finally quitting Hollywood. After years of Portia begging her to leave her talk show behind, she’s finally relenting.” The supposed source goes on to say that Warner Bros., which produces “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” is prepared to offer her an enormous salary to stay with the show, “but she promised Portia that this time, nothing would change her mind.”
From there, the questionable tipster further contends that DeGeneres has “decided to step back so that she and Portia can start a family.” “After Ellen committed to quitting in 2020, Portia said something switched,” adds the suspicious insider. “Now they’re closer than ever and looking forward to the future with a new purpose. It’s pretty much saved their marriage.” The “source” goes on to say that the spouses will “either adopt or get a surrogate,” are hoping for twins and are already looking forward to “designing nurseries.”
The tabloid’s story was seemingly concocted because DeGeneres admitted in a recent New York Times interview that her wife wants her to leave daytime TV. But the magazine doesn’t mention that de Rossi, who recently retired from acting to launch an art company, never asked her wife to “quit Hollywood.” In fact, de Rossi told the newspaper, “I just think she’s such a brilliant actress and stand-up that it doesn’t have to be this talk show for her creativity. There are other things she could tackle.” The former actress went on to suggest that DeGeneres could host a radio show or a podcast. Life & Style makes it seem like DeGeneres’ wife is urging her to retire for good, but she never suggested that the comedian leaves Hollywood completely.
Meanwhile, the idea that the spouses want to start a family simply isn’t accurate. In a 2016 interview with the Daily Telegraph, DeGeneres admitted that she and de Rossi talked about having kids early on in their relationship, “but we just decided we like our conversations not being interrupted and our furniture without sticky grape juice on it.” The talk show host added, “Also, I think in this profession it can be really tough for children. It’s hard for them to have to share their parents with the world.” DeGeneres even dismissed the notion in her recent New York Times profile. While talking about false tabloid stories, the comic said, “I hear Portia and I are divorcing every other week or having a baby or whatever.”
Despite DeGeneres already making it clear that she and de Rossi don’t want kids, Gossip Cop still checked in with a source close to the talk show host, who confirms the couple isn’t having a baby. As for the future of her talk show, we also reached out to a Warner Bros. insider, who’s fairly confident that DeGeneres will renew her contract past 2020. Regardless of her decision, she’s not “quitting Hollywood” and having children with de Rossi. The tabloid’s cover story is simply fabricated.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
