Is Brad Pitt relapsing on pot? That’s the unsubstantiated claim made by one of this week’s magazines. Gossip Cop, however, is told it’s untrue.
According to the National Enquirer, Pitt has “relapsed” and begun smoking weed again. The supermarket tabloid alleges Pitt’s “attempt at rehab has gone up in smoke and he’s getting high on pot again after vowing to clean up his act when his marriage collapsed.” The outlet contends Pitt fell off the wagon while filming Ad Astra in 2017.
To lend credence to its article, the often discredited magazine quotes a supposed “insider” as saying, “Brad set out to make the ultimate spacey movie with Ad Astra, but got a little too deep into method acting for the movie.” The same anonymous tipster insists the actor “smoked a little grass to get in the right frame of mind during filming.”
Making sure to use every synonym for marijuana, the seemingly fabricated source continues, “Brad had no problem dipping back into his bag of weed, especially now that it’s legal in California.” Of course, the fact that it’s been legalized in California is unrelated to Pitt’s decision to quit pot, which grew out of his desire to be a better father while still with Angelina Jolie. Then, in a feeble attempt to tie its narrative about Pitt allegedly smoking pot while shooting the sci-fi thriller Ad Astra, the magazine writes it was all part of the actor’s “efforts to achieve new levels of consciousness to match his high-altitude role.”
The movie is about an Army engineer, played by Pitt, who goes on an adventure through the solar system to find his father, who went on a mission to Neptune to find extra-terrestrial life. It has nothing to do with pot or getting high. Nor was there “method acting” involved or required. Sometimes Gossip Cop wonders whether the highly creative writers at that tabloid live an in alternate universe.
Curiously, towards the end of its article, the habitually disproven magazine contends that at Jennifer Aniston’s recent birthday party, Pitt was “spotted with a drink in his hand.” Immediately afterwards, the publication backs down from its claim by adding, “It wasn’t clear that Brad’s glass contained alcohol.” Still, the tabloid asserts his “presence at a bash with free-flowing booze was worrying for friends.” No, it was not, and no legitimate outlet reported he was drinking alcohol or absurdly alleged his proximity to it was an issue.
It bears mentioning in 2017, the same year production began on Ad Astra, Pitt discussed in a GQ cover story how he quit drinking, as well as opened up about his past pot use. When asked by the publication whether it was difficult to stop smoking weed, he said pointblank, “No.” He even alluded to having given that up a long time ago.
Pitt told the magazine, “I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family.” And when pressed about how he went from loving wine and alcohol to becoming sober, Pitt replied, “Don’t want to live that way anymore.” And by all accounts, he hasn’t.
Gossip Cop checked in with a mutual friend of ours and Pitt’s about the magazine’s story, and we’re told in no uncertain terms, the tabloid’s premise about him relapsing with pot is “ridiculous.” We’re not entirely surprised by the falsity of the report, based on the outlet’s track record. In fact, a little less than a year ago, Gossip Cop busted same the publication when it wrongly maintained friends of Pitt feared he would relapse with alcohol after attending a book party for Sean Penn.
That never happened, nor did Pitt date Neri Oxman and build a “love nest” with her, for example, or a slew of other crazy scenarios the tabloid has manufactured about the actor over the years. The truth is the magazine publishes a lot of phony tales about him. Much like the current article, the vast majority of them offer no proof whatsoever and ultimately go to pot.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
