One of this week’s tabloids claims Ben Affleck‘s sobriety has caused a rift between him and Matt Damon, who doesn’t want to hang out with his friend now that he doesn’t drink. The story is completely false and ridiculous. Gossip Cop can correct it.
According to Star, Damon has distanced himself from Affleck amid the actor’s latest stint in rehab, but his reason for doing so is because they can no longer be “drinking buddies.” A supposed source tells the magazine, “It’s not like Matt’s getting drunk and getting in the car – he likes to drink responsibly,” but “his drinking has absolutely limited the amount of time he can spend with Ben, who’s trying to lead a sober life.”
The seemingly phony source further contends that Damon has been spending more time with his pal Chris Hemsworth because he “never turns down a chance to party with his bros.” The alleged tipster adds, “Matt likes hanging with Chris because he doesn’t have to worry. Being around Ben means he can’t even enjoy a beer.”
None of this is remotely true. “Entertainment Tonight,” a much more reliable source for celebrity news than Star, reported a few months ago that Damon is a “key supporter” in Affleck’s recovery from alcohol. The outlet noted that Damon stopped drinking with his buddy several years ago because he’s a “very loyal, stable and grounded friend who only wants success and happiness for Ben.”
People magazine similarly reported that Damon “has and will always be there” for Affleck amid his struggles with substance abuse. The actor has been battling addiction for years, and he’s remained close with Damon throughout his troubled periods. The idea that Damon refuses to hang out with Affleck because he’s not partying anymore couldn’t be further from the truth. Gossip Cop also checked in with a source close to Damon, who tells us on the condition of anonymity that the tabloid’s article is a complete fabrication.
The unreliable outlet also fails to mention that Affleck and Damon have their own production company, Pearl Street Films, which has a number of projects in development. One of those projects is a movie about an ex-cop who scammed a McDonald’s Monopoly contest for millions of dollars. Affleck will direct the film and Damon is set to star. The two actors aren’t just close friends, they’re also business partners and collaborators.
It should be mentioned, last year Gossip Cop busted Star‘s sister outlet, the National Enquirer, for falsely claiming Damon had replaced Affleck with Hemsworth as his new best friend. In that equally bogus story, Damon was supposedly distancing himself from the actor because of his demons. This time around, the tabloid alleges Damon no longer wants to hang out with his buddy because he’s recovering. Both narratives are untrue, and the magazine simply has no insight into the longtime friendship between the two actors.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
