According to TMZ, “Police in Peru say they found U.S. mountaineer William Stampfl’s mummified body Friday near a camp on Mount Huascaran, one of the highest peaks in the Andes.
“William was trying to summit Mount Huascaran back in 2002 when an avalanche buried him under snow and ice. Cops say his still-frozen body was found about 5,200 meters up the 6,768-meter mountain.”
According to police, the ice preserved William’s body and clothes for over two decades. Authorities found him with his California license, which helped identify him.
Reportedly, in 2022, Willian had been climbing the mountain with two of his friends, Steve Erskine and Matthew Richardson. An avalanche buried all three bodies.

Many people are talking about the wild discovery of William’s mummified body. The Associated Press shared a video update of the incident, which shows authorities carrying the body down from the mountain.
Many users commented on the YouTube video, sharing condolences with those involved.
“Hopefully the family can find newfound peace,” one person wrote.
However, others had more harsh perspectives on the matter.
“RIP & condolences??? The man passed 22 years ago,” one person wrote. “He was at peace, deceased on a mountain he chose to ascend. His remains were better preserved than in a box in the ground. His descendants are grown, if he had any. How about acknowledging the climbers who retrieved the body?”
Another added, “I have no sympathy for him or anyone else that dies while trying to climb dangerous mountains. Life is short, precious…fragile. Why risk your life needlessly?? There are so many other ways to feel fulfilled in life.”
“That’s a very dangerous mountain with ice and snow avalanches,” a third person pointed out. “Some mountains should not be climbed.”
