It's safe to say that the on-screen camaraderie between "Daredevil" co-stars Charlie Cox & Elden Henson is a major reason the Netflix show is such a hit. Cox's Matt Murdock and Henson's Foggy Nelson are partners and best friends in the Marvel comic, so their authentic friendship is easily one of the top things the live-action adaptation needed to nail — and almost every fan would say that Cox and Henson do that successfully. What would happen, then, if the two buddies were pitted against one another?
That's exactly what occurred this past weekend at Wizard World in St. Louis, where Cox and Henson co-headlined a "Daredevil" Q & A panel and their real-life friendship was on clear display, with fans in the audience laughing at their stories and hanging on to every word. Yet when one fan asked the acting partners to name the other's most annoying quality, things got even more entertaining.
Henson got big laughs from the audience when he immediately responded to the fan's question by saying, "I know my answer right away." He then deadpanned his advice for any actor working with Cox in the future: "Don't stand down wind of him after he's had a protein shake. He has A LOT of protein shakes, he's in very good shape." Way to turn your criticism into a compliment, Henson. Nicely done. Cox, for his part, laughed it off and admitted that yeah, he can't help that. After all, Murdock has to be in EXCELLENT shape.
When it was Cox's opportunity to turn on Henson, his complaint of the actor proved to be a bit more understandable: "There are days where I'll come to work and we'll have this big scene and I'll be thinking of these big ideas and I'll get to Eldon and be like 'Hey dude, don't know how you feel but I was thinking maybe we could do *this* for the scene...' and Eldon will go 'Yeah...I haven't read it yet so let me just take a look and I'm sure that's cool.' We were even finishing an episode and I just got the new episode and I said to Eldon 'Dude, did you read the new episode' and he goes 'Yeah, I haven't even read this one yet.'" At this, Cox turned to Henson who sheepishly shrugged, eliciting huge laughs from the audience.
So, Cox needs to cool it on the protein shakes and Henson needs to actually brush up on his lines before hitting set. All jokes aside, though, the two actors have nothing but love and mutual respect for each other, which was evident later on in the panel when Henson paid Cox a genuinely heartwarming compliment: "I really heavily rely on Charlie because he's one of the most thoughtful people I've ever worked with and I mean this in a positive way...he's relentless in making sure things are right. I feel like my job on the show is to just to try to do whatever I can to help the show along. At the end of the day, it's his [Cox's] show, it's about Daredevil."
At this praise from Henson, Cox was quick to return the love: "I remember reading the first two scripts and thinking it would be a tall order for whoever was gonna play Foggy, because it would be too easy to make him a caricature on the show who just says stupid stuff without any feeling behind it. I'm immensely impressed with what Eldon brings to this character - and I mean this - because he brings so much heart and he makes that character funny but you also believe him. You don't for a second believe he's a caricature. And I say this to him regularly but [Henson] really is the heart and soul of this beast. The beating heart of 'Daredevil' is Foggy Nelson so kudos to him."
Cue the bro hugs. It's the off-screen camaraderie between Cox and Henson that's a major reason Netflix's "Daredevil" has been such a hit — way to go, guys.
